Environmental Health is the branch of public health that focuses on the interrelationships between people and their environment, promotes human health and well-being, and fosters healthy and safe communities. As a fundamental component of a comprehensive public health system, environmental health works to advance policies and programs to reduce chemical and other environmental exposures in air, water, soil and food to protect residents and provide communities with healthier environments.
The National Diploma (ND) Environmental Health Technology is a terminal programme structured to last for two (2) years (4 semesters).
Globally, the functions of an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) include Waste Management, Food Hygiene and Control, Pest and Vector Control, Environmental Health Control of Housing and Sanitation, Epidemiological investigation and Control, Air quality Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Water resources Management and Sanitation, Noise control, Protection of Recreational Environment, Radiation Control and Health, Control of Frontiers, Air, Sea Ports and Border crossing , Pollution Control and abatement, educational activities i.e. Health/ Hygienic Education and Promotion, Promotion and Enforcement of Environmental Health quality standards, Collaborative efforts to study the effects of Environmental Hazards and Environmental Health Impact Assessment.
After successful completion of HND Environmental Health Technology, the Trainee Environmental Health Officer shall be placed on a one year internship under the supervision of a licensed Environmental Health Officer by the Council before being mobilised for NYSC. The trainee is expected to work directly in any area of Environmental Health as may be approved from time to time by the Council.
On graduation from training institution, the trainee is granted one year temporary licence to enable such a trainee to practice during the internship. On completion of the one year internship, candidate shall sit for the Council’s certification examination. Successful candidates shall be registered to practice as professional Environmental Health Officers in line with Act 11 of 2002.
The minimum entry requirement into the National Diploma in Environmental Health Science programme is five (5) credit passes in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), National Examination Council (NECO) or General Certificate in Education (GCE) ordinary level at not more than two (2) sittings. The subjects must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology/Health/Agricultural Science, Chemistry and any one from the following: Geography, Economics, Food and Nutrition, Physics, Technical Drawing.
