ABOUT HIM
HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT
The field of Health information management has been a recognized field of professional study for almost 85 years. It was originally called medical records science and members of the of the profession were originally called medical record librarians. From it inception, the mission of the profession was to elevate the standards of clinical record keeping in hospitals, dispensaries and other healthcare facilities (AHIMA 2010)

The HIM department is one among the Seven (7) departments we
have in Emirates College of Health Sciences and Technology kano State. We train
students in the following Cadres:
ND – 2 years
PD – 3 years
HND – 2 years
ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
PD Health Information Management
PD (3YEARS)(HRORBN)
To enroll for the PD program, a student must have SSCE.
He must have a total of five credit passes in ENGLISH, MATHS, BIOLOGY/HEALTH SCIENCE, CHEMISTRY/PHYSICS AND ANY OTHER SUBJECT.
ND Health Information Management
ND (2YEARS)(NBTE and HRORBN)
To enroll for the ND program, a student must have written JAMB and SSCE.
He must have a total of five credit passes in ENGLISH, MATHS, BIOLOGY/HEALTH SCIENCE, CHEMISTRY/PHYSICS AND ANY OTHER SUBJECT.
HND Health Information Management
Environmental Health is the branch of public health that focuses on the interrelationships between people and their environment, promotes human health and well-being, and fosters healthy and safe communities.
REGULATORY BODY STATUSES
All the Programs we run within the department are fully accredited by the Main professional body which is Health Records Registration board of Nigeria (HRORBN) and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
The NBTE Regulates the ND programs while the HRORBN regulates the PD programs.
All the programs we run within the department have been accredited by the respective professional and National Body.

The HIM professionals are trained to render the following:
· Record generation and completion
· Medical coding operations
· Medical Transcription
· Data Analysis
· Database administration
· Database design
· Data Security
· Information Validation and Authentication etc.
PROSPECTS AND PROFESSIONALISM
As a Information Management department, we train our students to face the challenges of the 21st century, that is the use of ICT to Manage patient information.
The demand for healthcare data had increased over the years, our students will be able to fit in any system for as long as data or information management is involved. There are a lot of career opportunities especially academic development; any of our ND students can apply for direct entry at the university to study other health related courses and ICT courses e.g. Health Education and promotion, Computer science etc.
Also our HND students can apply for PGD in Health Economics, Health Education, Information management, Computer science and a lot more.
A health information Management professional who has undergone the above training is expected to observe his or her professional code of conduct or principles which primarily are to:
· Keep patient information Confidential
· Protect the privacy of patient information
· Secure patient information
· Use patient information in such a way that will benefit the patient e.t.c
